CD4 is the major receptor on T-cells for the envelope glycoprotein of human immunodeficiency virus type 1 (HIV-1), and is also the receptor for another human immunodeficiency virus type 2 (HIV-2). Mutations in the CD4 gene cause the primary immunodeficiency, AIDS. The extracellular region of CD4 contains two immunoglobulin-like domains followed by three cysteine-rich regions. Studies have shown that the CD4 protein is synthesized in the rough endoplasmic reticulum as a heterodimer composed of a 20-kD glycoprotein, designated gp21, and a 21-kD protein, designated gp24, that are nonc
